Kelvin Beachum Jr. has one of the most important jobs in sports: protecting the quarterback. Beachum will be tasked with protecting Blake Bortles, the promising young quarterback the Jaguars selected with the third overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.
Sounds like a lot of pressure. But for the 6-foot-3, 303-pound Beachum, playing football is easy. It’s his philanthropic work off the field that has him feeling the self-imposed pressure.
The 26-year-old, from Mexia, Texas, has become a global ambassador for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education, encouraging children to become interested in STEM and to understand the potential career opportunities available in STEM-related fields.
Beachum recently visited the National Robotics Center at Carnegie Mellon University, and it inspired him to launch his own STEM event called “STEM Days” in his hometown from April 12-14. The three-day event will bring together elementary, middle, and high school students who will interact with robots and other STEM-related equipment not readily available to many.
Beachum joined The Robotics Trends Show to discuss STEM initiatives, how to bring a quality STEM education to all, and why he loves self-driving cars.
